Art and Politics Collide as Neva Opens at the Public Theater

Neva, Guillermo Calderon’s political drama about actors and revolutionaries in Russia, opens at the Public Theater on March 11. The production marks the English language premiere of the play, directed by the playwright and featuring translation by Andrea Thome.

Neva tells the story of Anton Chekhov’s widow Olga, a Russian actress who casts doubt over herself after the death of her famous husband. As she and two other actors wait for the rest of their company, they muse about love, art, acting and political idealism while the rest of the city faces terror from the tsarist regime in the streets.

The show features performances from Bianca Amato, Luke Robertson and Quincy Tyler-Bernstine. Neva marks the second show in the Public’s spring 2013 season; the rest of the program includes Old-Fashioned Prostitutes (A True Romance), Here Lies Love and Venice.
